Factors to Consider When Choosing a B350 Motherboard

  • Form Factor

There form factor or size is the leading consideration when selecting a B350 motherboard. Motherboards sizes range from ATX, micro-ATX to mini-ITX (largest to the smallest).

Majorly, the number of memory slots, PCIe slots and the ports onboard determine the form factor/size.

You’ll be fine with micro-ATX or even mini-ITX motherboards if you have a small case or all you don’t care for many ports and do not intend to integrate multiple graphics cards.

But it’s prudent that you take as much time as possible before deciding. It’d be terribly painful to purchase a micro-ATX or mini-ITX motherboard today only to realize later that you need more ports, slots, etc.

For a tower or a desktop, we’re sorry that you have no other choice but to go for an ATX motherboard.

  • The CPU Socket

Start by thinking about the CPU you plan to use with your motherboard. If the CPU and the motherboard’s sockets aren’t compatible, then the two will not connect.

As it is, B350 boards are only compatible AM4 sockets. That makes compatibility a lot easier, which means you should have no trouble with this aspect.

  • Graphics Card Support

Virtually all AMD motherboards come integrated GPU, which helps with the visual output, but that's not all.

If you run operations that demand high visual accuracies such as video editing, gaming, and graphics design, then you might need to install one or several aftermarket graphics cards depending on the size of your motherboard.

  • Expansion Slots

PCIe expansion slots range from the short PCIe x 1 slot to the long PCIe x16 slot. In between the two, you’ll find PCIe x 4 slots and PCIe x8 slots. However, most motherboards feature x4 and 16 slots.

PCIe x1 slots will help for things like USB and SATA while PCIe x 16 slots are useful for additional graphics cards and RAID cards.

Number of Ports

Basically, the motherboard has to feature USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. But right now, we have USB 3.1 Gen 1 and USB 3.1 Gen 2. An emerging trend that's spreading like wildfire in the tech industry is USB Type C, used for charging and high-speed data transfer.

Then there's a Thunderbolt port, which, although a rare feature in the budget motherboards, allows for extreme data transfers as high as 40Gbps. Motherboards support a thunderbolt though dedicated add-on cards.

A PS/2 port comes in handy if you plan on using a keyboard and mouse, and it goes without saying that you’ll need it.

Are audio ports important? Of course. Check out the ports and interfaces available for your audio so you can connect headphones and speakers.

Planning to use integrated graphics? Make sure that your motherboards has integrated HDMI and DisplayPort interfaces.

Integrated Add-Ons

For wireless internet connection, the motherboard must have a Wi-Fi card. A Gigabit Ethernet is integral for reliable wired internet connection.

Bluetooth is another feature you might need for your built, although not all motherboards have the mechanism pre-soldered.

Wrapping Up

If there’s something great about B350 motherboards, then it’s the way they’re optimized for overclocking. It’s by overclocking that you can boost your build so you can make the most out of the system. While there may not be lots of aspects to consider when purchasing a B350 motherboard, the few pointers available will still confuse. The rule of thumb is to pay close attention to the ports, expansion slots, graphics card support, etc. We hope you’ve found an excellent high-performance B350 motherboard for your build.
